Know all those FREE apps and services we all love? Why do you suppose they are free? What’s to be gained by pouring thousands of hours into developing a product only to give it away. Well, it turns out, there is no free lunch. While the product you downloaded and use for free might seem innocuous enough, in actually, the product is YOU! These companies have to pay salaries and themselves somehow for their hard work, so instead of selling a product, they are selling you (and me). We are not saying that is always a bad thing by any measure. Google runs a wonderful search engine and makes billions placing ads for the things you are searching for next to every search. That’s a good thing. On the other hand, sometimes companies get a little too personal and deliver ads for things you might not want everyone knowing you searched for, or deliver ads for websites and products you already use, wasting their money doing so. The folks at Bizbrain have put together this infographic on how companies sell our information to make money for themselves.
